Hiram College Required Notebook Personal Computer Notice

In addition to multi-million dollar investments in a new physical education and wellness center, and a new residence hall under construction for Fall 2008, and a new dining hall scheduled to open in 2009, Hiram College has recently made an investment of several hundred thousand dollars in new classroom and laboratory instructional technology. In order to maximize this investment and better integrate technology into the classroom, Hiram College is instituting a required notebook PC policy for incoming students beginning Fall Semester 2008.

Our research has shown that the vast majority of students who enter Hiram purchase and bring some form of a PC from home. The goal of the new policy is to standardize these platforms to allow all of our students to have comparable hardware.

The mandatory PC working policy is as follows:

  • Incoming students for Fall 2008 are required to bring a notebook PC to campus.
  • The recommended notebook computers are the Dell Latitude notebook PC models D530, D630 and D830 which can be purchased through Dell at www.dell.com/Hiram.  There are occasional updates to model numbers.  The current naming conventions are acceptable.
  • Dell Latitude notebook PC models D530, D630 and D830 purchased through Dell at www.dell.com/Hiram will be supported by the Hiram College Dray Computer Center Help Desk.
  • If a student chooses to bring a computer other than the specific models mentioned above, they will be responsible for providing their own support.
  • Students and families should be aware that special financing is available through Dell at www.dell.com/Hiram or they may speak with a Hiram College financial aid counselor about other financing possibilities.
  • Any questions regarding whether an existing PC might meet required specifications may be directed toward the Help Desk at Hiram College by sending an email to helpdesk@hiram.edu.
