What To Do On a College Visit

Picking the right college can be a difficult task, that’s why sorting through various school mailers and researching institutions online should only be a supplement and never the deciding factor. Visit campuses! Challenge schools to show you and your student all that they have to offer!! This is the most effective way to see if a college is the right fit. However, in order to put institutions to the test students must be prepared to get the most from a visit. Here’s how:

  • Schedule a visit when classes are in session and not during mid-terms or finals. This will give your student the “real” feel for the campus. You and your student will be able to see how students interact and are more likely meet students, faculty, and coaches.
  • Go on the campus tour, but don’t judge the school based on what you see. The tour will provide highlights, but leave time at the end of the day to walk around alone and explore areas of the school that are important to your student. Look at bulletin boards or school newspapers to see what they are focusing on. Ask students you pass about their opinion of the college.
  • Ask questions. Before coming on campus be prepared to ask admissions, faculty, or students questions about the college. Encourage your student to do the same. There should never be a question you are afraid to ask!
  •  If the campus offers an overnight for students take advantage of this!!! However, don’t let your entire impression depend on the student your student is staying with. Staying the night allows your student to get a real sense of the community on campus while experiencing a taste of what will be part of their daily life including dining, residence life, and class.
  • At the end of the visit stand in the middle of campus and ask your student if the college is somewhere they can see themselves. If it feels right encourage your student to apply, if not, then move on. It’s either a fit or not, go with your gut.
